EMPLOYEE WELLNESS
Merrill Lynch Strives to Minimize the Impact of Cancer
Employers have the greatest opportunity to improve employee health and control costs by making tobacco cessation a priority. Tobacco use is the single greatest cause of excess health care expenditures and productivity losses, totaling more than $167 billion each year. Statistics like these helped convince executives at Merrill Lynch, the global financial services provider, to contract with the American Cancer Society in September of 2006 to make their Quitline®-the Society's telephone counseling tobacco cessation service- available to all of its U.S. employees. "We've heard directly from employees who smoke that this is a great benefit," says Jeanette Fuente, vice president of corporate wellness.
