Senator Hillary Clinton Speaks to NSEA Members

Presidential candidate Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., spoke to more than 600 NSEA members, leaders, and guests at Del Sol High School in Las Vegas, Wednesday. The New York Senator arrived just after 5:30 p.m. and met with a group of invited guests for a VIP reception.

Senator Clinton talked about No Child Left Behind, early childhood education, as well as higher education.

"It was so nice of her to reach out to us and want to talk to Nevada educators," said NSEA President Barbara Clark. "She has been a strong supporter of public education, and it was important for us to hear what she has planned should she become the next president of our country. It was an honor to spend time with her and to watch her interact with my colleagues and the other community leaders."

Senator Clinton addressed the crowd for approximately 10 minutes and then took questions from the audience. She then graciously met and shook hands with some of the attendants before departing for her next destination, Los Angeles.

NSEA-NV Legislative Weekly Advance

The NSEA Lobby Team is in Carson City keeping track of bills, hearings, and other key discussions that are taking place. This week, the Distributive Schools Account (DSA)—the school funding budget—will be heard, at which point the proposed cuts in the budget will be discussed.

Contact members of the Senate Finance Committee and Assembly Ways and Means K-12 Subcommittee and urge them to preserve funding to the DSA, as well as to maintain incentive for teachers working at at-risk schools.

In honor of Read Across America Day, Assemblyman Bernie Anderson (D-Reno), will be introducing a resolution that commemorates March 2nd as Read Across America Day in Nevada. For more information on Read Across America, visit our website at http://www.nsea-nv.org.

NEA: Calling All Cyber Lobbyists! How Connected Are We?

Do you have a personal connection with any Member(s) of the U.S. House of Representatives or United States Senate? NEA wants to know. NEA has an ambitious agenda for legislation to support children and public education, and there are no better advocates for this agenda than real-life educators with hands-on experience working in schools across the country. Effective lobbying relies on personal relationships with policy makers, not only with NEA's Washington, DC lobbyists, but especially with NEA members who can share personal experiences with Members of Congress.

TAKE ACTION NOW

E-mail NEA at edinsider@nea.org if you have a personal connection with any Members of Congress. For example, are you personally acquainted with any Members?
