NEA Vision, Mission
and Values
As an organization, we have long been concerned about the impact of television on children. Hundreds of studies have confirmed that children who watch violent programs are more likely to exhibit aggressive behavior. And as we have seen all too often, that aggressive behavior hurts other students and disrupts our nation's classrooms. Our mission is to provide a great public school for every student. Great schools must be safe and orderly. We believe that the work of the Smart Television Alliance can help move us in the right direction!

Time to Take Control of Your TV! |

NEA has joined a national coalition of organizations representing millions of American parents, educators, and children to launch the
Smart Television Alliance (STA), which is designed to promote quality television content for children. During the course of a school year, studies show that the average child spends 900 hours in a classroom but nearly 1,023 hours in front of a television. The fact that the average child spends more time watching TV than in the classroom means parents need to make smart viewing choices to help foster learning at home.
The Smart Television Alliance, the first national partnership of its kind, will help parents make more informed decisions about children's TV consumption and find ways to turn it into a learning tool. We will encourage families to use information from trusted sources to identify shows that inform and educate children and to utilize technology to control what is on television and when it is watched.
And Team NEA, you will play a critical role in this effort! As part of the Alliance, NEA will build upon the expertise of our organization and its members by providing helpful television viewing tips called "Teachable Moments" to raise awareness of quality programming for children and help parents and the public use television programming in ways that benefit children's growth and development.
Get involved now! Sign up to find out how you can make television an educational experience for your family and your students.

We have been engaged on many fronts on the ESEA reauthorization. In the span of less than a week and timed to Congressional hearings, we secured the placement of opinion editorials and a letter-to-the-editor in three of the country's top five newspapers: USA Today, The New York Times, and The Washington Post. They effectively carried our message on NCLB's renewal to policymakers and millions of readers across the country.

A host of stars and leaders from the African Diaspora have partnered with us in a national campaign to strengthen relationships between public school educators and the nation's Caribbean and African communities. The campaign—dubbed “I Love My Child”—will include advertisements in traditional and nontraditional media, and town hall meetings in New York, Atlanta, and Miami. Unique website links have also been created to direct Caribbean and African parents to useful tools and information about public school issues.
